Issue: Too much time spent on SMP
“…and we always have a large number of SMP cases on the go. They generate a lot of queries and problems almost as soon as the employee knows they’re pregnant and these go on – we have to keep revisiting their case or recalculating and explaining their entitlements, this takes lots of time. A further complication is that some employees are entitled to benefit from our occupational maternity scheme and this generates a lot of queries too.”
The outcome, following a ‘one-day-wonder’ IPC consultation and training day for three members of the client’s staff:
We provided a bespoke IPC SMP illustration spreadsheet which calculates and prints the employee’s SMP and Occupational Maternity pay/leave entitlements. Each case is now saved as a spreadsheet for the duration of the pregnancy (and leave) which means that amendments can be entered and entitlements automatically recalculated at any time. Queries are down significantly and the staff who are involved now feel they have a much greater knowledge and understanding of entitlements.
