Issue: Inability to recruit experienced payroll staff

“Firstly, we find it difficult to obtain experienced staff in this area. Then, when we do have candidates, we cannot always judge whether they are capable of dealing with our complex payroll. In the past we have even resorted to trying specialist payroll recruitment agencies but this did not help either.  We were surprised that the agencies had not even met most of the candidates they put forward!  Within the next two months we will have a need for two more payroll staff - can you help in any way?"

The outcome:

A review of the team, their work patterns, skills and experience identified their combined strengths.  Two individuals were particularly accomplished in coaching and developing their colleagues.  Newly worded advertisements were designed to indicate payroll training would be provided for suitable candidates.  Applications were also encouraged from individuals working in other disciplines whose skills would be easily transferable.  It was made clear that part-time working would be considered. We supported the client through the whole process from candidate testing, through to profiling and selection.

Two part-time members of staff were recruited.  An induction training plan was designed and carried out with additional payroll training scheduled for the immediate future.  The client has saved the equivalent of one full-time salary.
